Onboarding Is Still a Key Topic:
Feedback from the Gulf Coast Symposium on HR
Is onboarding still a key topic for the today’s HR professional? Based on feedback Connect the Dots partners Brenda Hampel and Erika Lamont received in their May 14, 2015 presentation to the Gulf Coast Symposium on HR, the answer is a resounding “yes.”
Over 120 HR professionals chose to attend their session “Disrupt Your Onboarding Experience,” designed to help participants identify the strengths and weaknesses of their onboarding processes and integrate the newest onboarding practices with the best ones. The presentation included several real- time feedback polls to assess the current state of onboarding at participants’ organizations and help CTD tailor its content delivery.
Feedback from HR Professionals
Despite the clear business case for a strong onboarding program, the vast majority of participants reported that onboarding at their organizations was relatively limited. Most participants described their onboarding programs as consisting of mostly orientation activities (33%) or orientation activities with some training and socialization (32%), while only 12% had a formal, structured onboarding process.
HR professionals were motivated to improve their onboarding systems to increase retention and employee engagement. Opportunities to get new hires up-to-speed and ease manager participation were much less likely to be the drivers of change.
Many HR professionals said they planned to overhaul their entire onboarding programs. Among the specific areas in need of improvement, the need to include formal feedback topped the list. This suggests that the demand for early feedback tools such as Connect the Dots are you connected?® tool remains strong.
